Full transcript of Teaching Actors How to Act episode 41, hosted by acting coach Dan Rodandan.

Dan Rodandan:

Hello all and hello no one! It's me, Dan Rodandan, back from the dead. Yep, every day above ground is a day above ground and uh, and that's, that's my new motto. I think anybody who's been buried alive would take that motto on. But um... back from the dead. Back from the Dead Sea, back from the dead ends, on the far ends of the earth. Back from uh, wandering the fruited plains and the purple mountains and the wild and wasteful ocean. Back from experience, which is what you need to be a, a good actor. You need experience and, and heaven knows I've got five more years of it now since the last time we spoke.

Where does the time go? Where does it take? It gets hazy with the different chemicals and uh, different comas, but uh... yeah, five years. The last time I was looking, uh, Mitt Romney was running for president. And now...

(Coughs violently, sputtering and choking for an extended period)

(Swallows heavily)

Dan Rodandan:

A bug flew in my mouth. And uh... I, I swallowed it. I swallowed that whole thing and uh... ah, I, I think that got it. Well anyway, um... good to be back. Good to see ya, good to hear from ya, good to, good to catch up and surf on those pod waves. Good to, good to meet some Navy SEALs, good to meet the Mossad, good to meet the inside of a tanker truck, good to meet the nice ransom people, good to meet the border guards, good to meet the trained fighting gorillas, good to meet the young, but committed child soldiers.

Long story short, who cares about all that? Danny boy is home. Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pods are calling! I forgot to say that, I'm acting coach Dan Rodandan, teaching actors how to act. Used to have a phone number, and that phone number was 917-214-8DAN. You can call me at 917-214-8DAN. Remember that? That number's gone. So now I have an email. The email address is 9172148DAN@gmail.com. 9172148DAN@gmail.com. So, uh, anything that you were gonna call me about, just write it down and email it my way. And uh, I can, I can get those now. I have access to email, which is lovely. And um... I think it's time you know, you can't, you can't see where you're going till you know where you've been, so let's, let's log on to this computer and see how the podcast is doing.

(Keyboard typing sounds)

Dan Rodandan:

I'm typing in "acting"...

(Mouse click)

Dan Rodandan:

Oh, the first page. Oh, second page. Okay, number six. That's pretty good. Let's see... oh, four out of five stars, you can't beat that, nothing higher than that. And reviews... let's see, reviews. Let me see all. "I don't care what this guy has done before, I laughed out loud, would blow this guy if I could." Oh, that's nice. "Worst podcast." Okay.

(Mouse click)

Dan Rodandan:

"This can't be real." Okay.

(Mouse click)

Dan Rodandan:

"Dumb as a stump." Okay.

(Mouse click)

Dan Rodandan:

Uh, don't waste a minute on it.

(Mouse click)

Dan Rodandan:

"Unbearably unfunny."

(Mouse click)

Dan Rodandan:

Uh, I loved it. Somebody said they loved it. Good. All right. There's that dopamine. All right, so... pretty, pretty, overall pretty good. Pretty... Number six. Who else is here? Who else is here? Who's ahead of me?

(Mouse clicking sounds)

Dan Rodandan:

Bunch of bullshit, bunch of bullshit, bunch of bullshit, no bullshit. Wait, no bullshit? The No Bullshit Acting Podcast: Action: The Pursuit of Acting Excellence with Leigh Foster? Leigh Foster. That Leigh Foster? The Leigh Foster I know? The Leigh Foster that I brought back from the dead like Lazarus, sitting in a pile of his own feces and Cheerio dust? And now he's number two. No bullshit. I call bullshit. I call... well... you know what, I'm, I'm just gonna call him. I call Leigh. Leigh Foster, I'm phoning a friend.

(Phone dialing sounds)

Dan Rodandan:

I'm making phone calls... yeah... I'm on the phone now, let's do phones. Welcome to phone town. Ring, ring, ring. Ring, ring, ring.

The Phone Call

Leigh Foster:

Hello.

Dan Rodandan:

Hello?

Leigh Foster:

Yeah, hello.

Dan Rodandan:

Hello?

Leigh Foster:

Yeah. Hey. Hey. Yes, guys. Hey. Calling you back. Yeah. I'll be right back. Make me another martini, I'll be right back. I'll be right back. Hello.

Dan Rodandan:

Leigh?

Leigh Foster:

Yeah. Hello, yes.

Dan Rodandan:

Is this Leigh?

Leigh Foster:

Yep.

Dan Rodandan:

Leigh!

Leigh Foster:

Leigh Foster, the big fa... Australian fa... Leigh. Foster.

Dan Rodandan:

Uh, it's me.

Leigh Foster:

Who is this?

Dan Rodandan:

This is me. This is... this is your old boy, this is your boy. This is your old buddy. This is D. It's your boy D. D-A-A-N.

Leigh Foster:

Dana?

Dan Rodandan:

It's your boy Dan. You've won a free interview with Dan Rodandan.

Leigh Foster:

Dan Rodandan. Acting coach Dan Rodandan, teaching actors how to act.

Dan Rodandan:

This is the real Dan Rodandan.

Leigh Foster:

Oh, this is the real Dan Rodandan.

Dan Rodandan:

This is Dan in the flesh, in the flesh and bones, on the pod waves. This isn't live, but I am recording. Legally, do I have your permission?

Leigh Foster:

Wow, man, I haven't... uh... it's been a while since I've heard from you.

Dan Rodandan:

It's been a while.

Leigh Foster:

I didn't know you were still alive. I'm actually really surprised.

Dan Rodandan:

Sure. It's gotta be very, very confusing to hear my voice again after so many... so many moons. And uh, in those many moons, little baby Leigh Foster, the shitting in a box Cheerios guy, has, has become, has gone from being on the side of a bus to calling in and talking about his wealth to creating a movement. A, a podcasting movement. I wonder where uh, where you got the idea to do that.

Leigh Foster:

Well, yeah. Um... I've been doing it for like five years now. Um...

Dan Rodandan:

Five years.

Leigh Foster:

Five years, yeah. I call it the No Bullshit Podcast, so I uh...

Dan Rodandan:

It's a little bit inside. A little bit inside acting, it's more about the... not the bolts and the crafts, not really the art or the uh, the heart, but um... but you know, hey, the world needs engineers. The world needs ditch diggers.

Leigh Foster:

Well, I interview people who are ahead in their careers and I ask them very specific questions about acting and uh, and how to be more successful and how to book more work. And um...

Dan Rodandan:

What, what is this booking work? What is that?

Leigh Foster:

Securing jobs that pay money in the acting industry.

Dan Rodandan:

So this is like a shill's guide to selling out.

Leigh Foster:

Well, you know what I, what I, what I try to do is I try to uh, give as much quality information to the acting community as I possibly can.

Dan Rodandan:

Yeah. Yeah, what is that? What does that mean?

Leigh Foster:

Quality refers to just the general uh... you know, the, the...

Dan Rodandan:

It sounds like you have a real good handle on it, so I'll, I'll just leave it at that. And how many podcasts did you do?

Leigh Foster:

I'm in the 70s somewhere, I'm not exactly sure.

Dan Rodandan:

Yeah, so also quantity information.

Leigh Foster:

Mostly quality though. I try, you know, it's... mostly about quality. Uh, quality of guests, quality of information. I try to cut out everything that, that is not useful.

Dan Rodandan:

Sure.

Leigh Foster:

Right.

Dan Rodandan:

I get that.

Leigh Foster:

Yeah. Because you always know what's gonna be useful for somebody and what's not gonna be useful.

Dan Rodandan:

You can see the future. A little bit of advice could save someone's life, what may resonate. And, and you cut out all the rest.

Leigh Foster:

You know, the thing is Dan, you know, here's a little piece of advice. I think that if you, as long as you... as long as you put out the information that's important to you, then it's gonna resonate with the audience. You can't try to please everyone. The moment you try to do that, you don't please anybody, right?

Dan Rodandan:

I uh... I have to admit something to you. And I'm not proud of it. And uh... I, I feel... I feel a little offended. I feel a little heartbroken... uh, that you, your first episode of your podcast came out the same week as the final episode of mine. Seems like you were an ambush predator waiting for the... waiting, waiting for your chance to uh, slip in the gap there. Because you know, you knew. You knew a week after I stopped putting stuff out, there was gonna be a big, hungry crowd waiting for the loaves and fishes. And uh... did you ever watch pro wrestling? Do you remember The Ultimate Warrior when he finally beat Hulk and took the title? Well, he, he did it by being more Hulk Hogan than Hulk Hogan was. And uh, once he got the crown... he was not a good champion, he didn't have the longevity. So everybody wanted Hogan to come back. Hogan! Hogan! Hollywood Hulk Hogan, NWO, the whole thing. And where's, where's the Ultimate Warrior? On BuzzFeed top 10 lists of dead wrestlers.

Leigh Foster:

I didn't take over your podcast, actually. I started a different podcast.

Dan Rodandan:

You rebranded.

Leigh Foster:

You rebranded Acting Coach Dan Rodandan Teaching Actors How to Act into...

Dan Rodandan:

Yeah, I mean, it's a snappy title, it's, it's... certainly for a younger generation. You call it Action?

Leigh Foster:

Yeah, so Action: The Pursuit of Acting Excellence is the one that I started. It's the No Bullshit Podcast dedicated to the pursuit of acting excellence. You know, I'm, I'm kind of the top brass when it comes to the uh, acting podcast world now. iTunes Top 3 No Bullshit Podcasts, you know, 250 No Bullshit five-star reviews. I think your... you're upwards of like 16 or 17?

Dan Rodandan:

Sure. Now when you say the No Bullshit Podcast, what does that mean? Who's, who's, what's bullshit? Who's bullshit?

Leigh Foster:

Well, mostly the other podcasts were bullshit.

Dan Rodandan:

And as soon as the only one that wasn't bullshit ended, you knew you had to pick up that mantle?

Leigh Foster:

Yours was bullshit. Yours was a steaming pile of shit. And that's how I found you. Steaming in a pile of your own shit crying about Cheerios.

Dan Rodandan:

And look at you today. You know, you're a big, you're a big deal now, you know, you've done, you've done it all, you're out there, you're working. You don't need this. You don't need this podcasting game. You, you, you've got so many things. Maybe some other people don't have so many things. I need your help. What would it take for me to be your sidek... to be your Andy... uh... Andy Rooney, Conan's friend?

Leigh Foster:

Right, um...

Dan Rodandan:

If I was your, your Ed Mac... Ed McMahon. You're Carson Daly, I'm Ed McMahon. How do we do that?

Leigh Foster:

Dan... Action: The Pursuit of Acting Excellence, the No Bullshit Podcast dedicated to the pursuit of acting excellence is just better than yours. It's always gonna be. It's not your fault, Dan.

Dan Rodandan:

It's not your fault?

Leigh Foster:

It's not your fault. It's not... it's not your fault.

Dan Rodandan:

It's not your fault, Dan.

Leigh Foster:

It's not your fault.

Dan Rodandan:

It's not your fault.

Leigh Foster:

Okay. You know what? Dan. It is your fault.

Dan Rodandan:

My fault?

Leigh Foster:

It is your fault.

Dan Rodandan:

Where I'm at, where you're at, that's my fault. It's your fault. It's all your fault. Everything you got is my fault. Everything I... everything I gave away is my fault. It's all my fault.

(Leigh speaking off-mic in the background)

Leigh Foster:

Hey bro, come back to the party, man! I've got, I've got some uh, some people waiting for me upstairs, so...

(Phone hangs up / dial tone)

After the Call

Dan Rodandan:

It's all my fault. It's, it's, it's all, it's all my fault. Uh... it's all my fault. Oh yeah, it's all my fault. Taking care of business. It's my fault.

(Sings)

Dan Rodandan:

If life gives you lemons, lemonade. That's what Beyonce says. And uh, I think she's got more positive reviews than Leigh Foster. I mean, if that's, if that's how we're measuring, if that's, if that's what we put em down on the table next to that ruler, I guess if that's how we're measuring...

Anyway, great, great to hear from you Leigh. Thanks for the call. And uh, no need... you can keep doing your podcast. You don't need my blessing. Uh, so... everything's fine there. And uh... um... Good to be back. Good to be back on the pod waves. Number six, still number six, I can hold on to that. So please rate, review, and smash that button. Uh, give, give, oh, all, all, you know, there's only one way to teach Leigh Foster a lesson, and that's to speak to him in the only language he knows, which is getting likes, getting uh, insta... whatever the metric is for this. So please, rate, review, and iPod. Give us, give us an iPod.

I'm really excited. I'm really happy. I'm excited about the future, I'm excited about the present, and I'm looking forward to all of the great guests that are just clamoring to be on the show. And uh... uh uh, please give me an email at 9172148DAN, 9172148DAN@gmail.com, 9172148DAN@gmail.com. Used to be my phone number, now it's not my phone number. It's just my email. But in all the old episodes I say the number a lot, so you can just, you're listening to those and in your head say @gmail.com. So... tell a friend.

Thank you so... ah, thank you so... ah, thank you so much for, for sticking with it, for, for hanging out these many five years, and uh, if you, if you do email me, I will read your email out loud, and I will answer the questions, and if you write a review, I will... I don't know, I'll read that out loud. As uh... you know, I don't know if anybody's ever done that before on a podcast.

Oh... it's just so nice to have electricity and running water. Hard to be mad about anything, really. But I still do it.
